In October last year, Mazda made the major news that it was working on a brand-new inline six-cylinder engine, maybe for a new Mazda 6 car but destined for the brand’s increasing portfolio of SUVs. Despite the dwindling hopes for a new Mazda 6, it seems that we will still enjoy the rewards of Mazda’s efforts in the form of a brand-new vehicle: the 2023 Mazda CX-90 SUV, which the company’s latest straight-six engine will power.

A single teaser picture has revealed a few details about Mazda’s next all-new model, but thus yet, details have been few. The side badging makes it clear that Mazda has completed the development of its inline-six engine and will be putting it in SUVs manufactured in the United States. Mazda has said that all future models would include an inline-six gas or plug-in hybrid engine, but there has been no mention of a hybrid version of this new CX-90.

Furthermore, Mazda said in a press release that the CX-90 would be a three-row SUV and would debut a new paint color named Artisan Red, as shown in the teaser picture. It’s going to be the next flagship model for the company. Therefore, it’s getting a brand-new huge vehicle base to accommodate all many seats. Compared to all existing Mazda models, the CX-90 will be “wider, longer, and more aggressive” in size. A new CX-70 SUV is also in the works, and the new platform will likely underpin it. Mazda’s Kodo design language, which features rounded, sleek forms, is carried over to the exterior and “uses light and shadow to their advantage.

As far as I can tell, the new Artisan Red hue was “designed expressly to fit big platform vehicles.” The 2023 Mazda CX-90 SUV will have its public debut in the first month of that year, giving us a better idea of the vehicle’s specifications. In its investor report for March 2019, Mazda revealed plans to build inline-six engines. The facility’s next stop will be in the USA, providing much-needed electricity. A badge reading “…LINE 6” has been shown in the latest CX-90 teaser.

Mazda inline-six engine specifications are mostly unknown. According to reports, the gas-powered variant has a displacement of 3.0 liters and, judging on the photographs available thus far, looks to be turbocharged. A total of 369 pound-feet of torque and 228 horsepower (170 kilowatts) are produced by the 3.3-liter turbodiesel engine (500 Newton-meters).

There is also a mild hybrid variant of this mill that generates 251 horsepower (187 kW) and 406 lb-ft of torque (550 Nm). You won’t be able to buy one of those oil burners in the United States. Mazda has announced the launching date of its new CX-90 crossover SUV as January 2023 in a brief press statement. Mazda may have a separate launch event or be associated with a current exhibition like CES in Las Vegas. The debut will be a global event, and the SUV will be available to consumers throughout the globe in 2024.

The inline-sixes were supposedly destined for Mazda’s new rear-wheel-drive architecture. The next generation Mazda6 was said to feature this technology. The release date in the first half of 2022 was anticipated but missed. There was talk about the manufacturer sharing certain chassis components with Toyota and Lexus.
